Primer and dehydrator: what is it, why is it needed and what is the difference?
The key factor for a reliable adhesion of the artificial material to the natural nail is the correct preparation of the nail plate. To ensure excellent adhesion and longevity of the manicure, it is important to use special products such as primer and dehydrator. These products ensure that your manicure lasts for 2-4 weeks, but to achieve the perfect result, you need to know the differences between them and in what order to apply them.
We're here to help you figure it out, so in this article we'll cover the 3 most frequently asked questions about dehydrators and primers. We will explain in detail their functions, the difference between them and what to look out for when choosing these products.

What is a nail dehydrator?

Dehydrator (nail prep) is a product for degreasing and disinfecting the nail plate before applying gel varnish or gel. It is applied before applying an acidic or non-acidic primer. This product is indispensable in nail extensions and gel polish manicures, especially on nails prone to hyperhidrosis. Without the use of a dehydrator can cause problems with the durability of the coating: gel-lacquer or gel can quickly begin to peel off, which will negatively affect the durability and quality of the manicure.

Dehydrator can be a component of disinfectants or sold as a separate product (in a can with a brush).

A quality dehydrator performs several key functions:

- restores the nail's natural pH level;
- effectively cleans the nail of dirt and greasy residues;
- removes excess moisture from the surface of the nail plate, ensuring perfect adhesion to the artificial material.

How to use the dehydrator correctly?

Apply the spray product to a lint-free cloth and gently wipe the nail, avoiding contact with the cuticle and side rollers.

The liquid dehydrator should be applied to the nail in a thin layer from cuticle to free tip using a brush. Remove excess by lightly pressing the brush against the edge of the can. Note that the dehydrator dries out on contact with air.

Nail primer: what it is and what it is for

The next step in preparing the nails before applying the base for gel varnish is the use of a primer.

Primer performs several key functions: it serves as a base coat for the subsequent application of coloured gel or gel varnish, and also protects natural nails from the effects of components of these materials.

In addition, the primer prevents the nails from coming into contact with chemicals contained in nail care products. Excluding primer from nail preparation can lead to problems such as flaking of the artificial material.
The primer fulfils several key functions:

- provides double adhesion (non-acidic primer), creating a strong bond between the natural nail and subsequent materials;

- dries and disinfects the nail surface (acidic primer), preventing the risk of fungus and infection under the coating. Effectively removes foreign particles and natural skin grease (which a dehydrator may not be able to cope with) without drying out the inner layers of the nail;

- protects the nail plate from the effects of aggressive substances contained in gels and gel-lacquers, in case of their frequent use;

- prolongs the life of the manicure, reducing the risk of peeling and cracking of the coating.

Acid-free and acidic primer

Depending on their composition and function, primers are acidic and acid-free.

1. Acid-free primer (bonder, ultra-bond) acts as a double-sided adhesive, creating a dispersion layer on the nail surface after application and air-drying. This layer provides a secure bond between the nail and the materials used in the manicure. For home use, acid-free primer is preferred, as it does not change the pH-balance of the nails and does not have a negative impact on their health. However, it is important to remember that such a primer does not disinfect and dry the nails, so it should be used in combination with a dehydrator.

It is usually indicated on the can whether the primer is acidic or non-acidic (acid or non-acid).

2. Acid primer is a product containing methacrylic acid, which gives it a characteristic pungent odour. The acid ensures maximum adhesion between the natural nail and the base coat for gel polish or gel. The primer should be applied very carefully, in a thin layer, as improper use can damage the nail plate, thin it, cause skin burns or provoke an allergic reaction.
.

The risk of bacterial infections increases significantly on nails exposed to hyperhidrosis. Acidic primer, with its bactericidal properties, effectively prevents the growth of microbes between the artificial material and the nail plate, providing additional protection and nail health.

Top 3 questions to ask about primer and dehydrator

1. What is the difference between acidic and acid-free primer?

Acidic primer is 70-100% methacrylic acid, which provides perfect adhesion between the natural nail plate and the gel polish or gel build-up base.

Acid-free primer contains a minimal amount of acid and special components that temporarily change the pH of the natural nail, bringing it closer to the pH of the artificial material, which is highly alkaline in nature. After application of acid-free primer on the surface of the nail is formed sticky dispersion layer, providing a strong adhesion of artificial material with the nail plate, which allows the manicure to remain flawless until the next correction.

2. Do I need a dehydrator when using an acid-free primer?

Yes!

The dehydrator effectively removes excess moisture from the nails, while the acid-free primer acts as a double-sticky tape, providing a secure bond and improving the longevity of the coating.

.

3. Are acid-free primer and bonder the same product?

Yes!

Today, manufacturers often use different names for the same product to create confusion among consumers. For example, an acid-free primer may also be called bonder, nail-bond or ultra-bond.

If the word ‘non-acid’ appears on the packaging of a product, whether it is a primer or a bonder, it means that the product is acid-free and acts as a dual adhesive.

There are many products on the market today, so don't be afraid to explore the range and try something new. However, be careful: attractive names and low prices can be deceptive. Always read the instructions carefully and pay attention to the purpose of each product indicated on the packaging.

Only with experience will you be able to understand all the subtleties and choose the products that best suit your needs and preferences.
